Garden, Rain, etc.

It is raining today. Yesterday I was at the garden plots for about 3 hours, and I have most of the seeds I wanted to grow this year in the ground. Actually I have all the vegetables I want to grow planted; I still want to grow a few flowers, but they need to wait for me to see how the food is going to do.

The Garden Is In Progressing

The garden is progressing well this year. I still have the two plot at the Gove Community Garden. The east one contains my perennials: herbs, rhubarb, and flowers. I have re-worked it this year. I reworked the herbs so they are more compact and grouped together more. I now have about half of the plot opened up for something else. I think I am going to put the tomatoes in that area; they might do better there,because it has been some time since there were tomatoes in the plot.

I have started planting seeds in the west plot. So far I have put in lettuce, radishes, swiss chard, and red beets. I am planning to put in some peas, zucchini, cucumbers, kohl rabi, and carrots. The only other thing would be to put in some flowers here and there.

The garden is planted

The garden is in the ground. Oh, there is still room for flowers and other decoration, but the vegetables are in place. The tomatoes are actually starting to grow. The picture does not look like much because there is so much open spaces, but that will be different by mid-July. I am ready for the tomatoes.

Things Are Changing

This past week I had several changes to my life. The first is that I went mobile; I had been holding out to see if the iPhone would be coming to Verizon. There are rumors that they will have something in August. However, since I was approaching 6 months since my contract, they were offering me a Droid for less than $100. I could not pass up this price. (I would be surprised if the price of the Verizon iPhone would be less than $200.) So I now have the Droid, and it is set up to do most of the things I want to do. I am able to listen to the Pride 48 stream on the way home from work. (Since they are all set up with Eastern time, you have to rush to get home to listen to them.) I have also setup things for the chat room, but this may not work with the stream. However, I am mobile.

The second thing new is this blog has its first follower. Now I have to make sure that I produce better and regular content. I know that the past few weeks have been little more than weather reports. Well that is an important issue in my life as one of my hobbies is gardening, and weather is important in that.

Now to the garden: my sister and I planted a lot of the seeds: carrots, zucchini, swiss chard, and beans. This just about completes one of the plots. There is room for one more row, and I am holding out for red beets and kohlrabi. The second plot has a lot of perennials, so there is little room other things. We are going to put in a cucumber and acorn squash. We are also starting to lay down the soaker hoses to make watering easier. We will finish things tomorrow.

The weather is very warm. The wind has been stiff today too. It just is not cold. That is an improvement.

Tomatoes Are Planted

The tomatoes that were planted last were survived the freeze on Wednesday. They need a lot of love, because they have so cold. However, they have kept nicely wet; all they need is some warmth to get them going.

We also added four more tomatoes to the collection. These are the hybrid varieties. We now have a variety of plants. We need one or two more large tomatoes.

We did not do any other planting as the plots were really wet. We will be planting the seeds next weekend. SPRING IS HERE.

Sunday

It is a nice day. The pool outside my window is steaming, but I know the pool is not that hot, so the air must be very cool.

Yesterday got nice, so today should be even better. My sister and I are going to go over to the Community Garden today to see what happened to the tomatoes last week. We are also talking about making a trip to Home Depot to see what they have to offer is the line of cheap plants. We may also go down to Country Fair, a nursery company, to see what they have in the way of higher end plants.

Helping My Sister

I spent the day over at my sister's condo helping her get ready for the season. I worked in her little flower garden. I pulled the weeds and removed the leaf litter, so it would all look better. I also hosed down her patio furnisher. She paid me with breakfast and cat food; so Bonita and I are both well feed now.

Weather

Last night was very cold. When I went out to catch the bus, there was ice on the car, etc. I have not been to the garden to about the tomatoes. There is a good chance that they are icicles.

The Garden

Now that we have started planting things in the garden, the weather people still insists on predicting snow later in the week. Actually I don't think snow will be that bad, but I am more worried about the temperatures. Tomatoes really set in better when the temperatures are on the warm side. I think they will be okay, but they might not start as fast as they would if it was in the 50's.

It is Tomato Planting Time

Well maybe not really, but there are four tomatoes in west plot in the Community Garden. The Denver Botanic Gardens had their spring plant sale, and the plants were purchased there. They had to placed out in the garden, because there is really no good place to store them while we wait for the season to progress a little more. They are small plants, so they should be able to handle the winds a little better than bigger plants would.

The Garden Plot

Went over to the garden plot today with the sister. The plot has not changed much since we were last there except the bind weed has taken off, so a little weeding was done. We also put in a row of radishes; my sister wants to try Watermelon Radishes and I want French Breakfast, so we put in few of each. If the weather stays cool and wet, they should do well.

The Garden Is Ready

The garden is ready for planting. My sister were over to the plots this morning, and were able to finishing the spading of the plots and cleaning up the perennials. So we are now ready for the planting; we just need to wait for the water in the gardens to be turned on and for the chance of frost to decrease.

I just want some tomatoes to be ready for my BLT sandwich. :-)

The Garden Has Been Started

I spent 2 hours over at the Community Garden this morning cleaning things up and starting the spading. The plots are in pretty good shape this year; the soil was not compacted very much this past winter. I was able to get the large open plot totally turned over this morning. I will be trying to get the other one done tomorrow. The water was not turned on in the Gardens, because it is still possible to get a very hard frost, which could freeze the pipes. Also for this reason it is still too early to start putting a lot of plants and seeds into the ground; it still another month before I can start looking at my tomato plants.

The Weekend Is Here

The weekend is here, and I am looking forward to having some time where I do not have a big event planned already. There are four weekends this month, and I have a play on Saturday evening in three of them. Actually I think I need to get out in my garden plots to start that little project. There is still a lot of time before I have to have things ready for the tomatoes, which is mid-June. However, the weather is frequently a problem this time of year, and waiting to the last minute could create a rush.
